Rare Orchids


The types of species of rare orchids are protected in Indonesia. There are 29 species of rare orchids are protected in Indonesia based on Government Regulation. 7 of 1999 concerning the preservation of plants and animals.

Indonesia is a country with a wealth of orchid germplasm second largest after Brazil. Of about 26,000 species of orchids in the world, about 5,000 to 6,000 types of them are in Indonesia. And not a little diantaran different species of orchids that merpakan orchid species endemic to Indonesia.

Even now, the number of species of orchids in Indonesia grew by continuing discovery of new species. Early 2010 ago, LIPI find some new orchid species in Borneo. Species such as Dendrobium kelamense D.Metusala, PO Byrne and JJWood. as has been published in international journals Malesian Orchid Journal in March 2010.

But the genetic wealth of orchids in Indonesia is increasingly threatened. Many species of orchids are increasingly rare even allegedly extinct in Indonesia. Increasingly scarce, and even destroyed some species of orchids caused by malaknya illegal logging, forest fires and poaching action by orchid enthusiasts who do not pay attention to aspects of nature conservation in the original.
